What do you do when your life turns upside down? Whatever it takes.
When Elizabeth Parker arrives in Deer Ridge with her eight-year-old son, she's constantly looking over her shoulder, afraid her husband won't believe she's dead, despite the new identity provided by the high-end firm of Blackthorne, Inc. Within hours of her arrival, a man shows up claiming he's there to hook up her gas line. When he keeps turning up, she's wary as to his motives. For Elizabeth, trust doesn't come easy. She'll never let her husband lay a hand on her son, no matter what, and if this man is working for her husband, she wants no part of him.
Mark Grinciewicz, Grinch to everyone who knows him, was Blackthorne, Incorporated's top pilot. When his ex-wife dies, he is left with custody of a five-year-old son he hardly knows, and everything changes. Determined to do what it takes to help his son adjust to a new life, Grinch finds himself tethered to the ground, unable to do what he loves—fly.
When he gets a call from Blackthorne, requesting that he take a simple assignment—teach a woman how to fit into the community under her new identity—he reluctantly accepts the task. Bad enough he's not supposed to let on he's aware of her identity, or that he's on her side. But what he doesn't know is that she has something her husband needs, and the man will do just about anything to get it back. Suddenly, everyone is a potential threat. Can Grinch break through her defenses and earn her trust in time to save her without endangering her son or his?
Danger in Deer Ridge is the fourth book in the Blackthorne, Inc. romantic suspense series. Although it follows When Danger Calls and Where Danger Hides chronologically, it was written to stand alone.

Elizabeth Parker and her son are on the run from her abusive husband who is a high profile accountant and wants to take revenge. Not because they left him, faked their deaths and took on new identities but because Elizabeth took something with her that is important to him. Through Blackthorne Inc. Elizabeth has relocated to a rural town in Colorado and tries to reorganize her life.Mark "Grinch" Grinciewicz, is a pilot for Blackthorne Inc. who is on leave and also tries to regroup his life. His ex-wife and her husband have died recently and Grinch has "inherited" his five year old son Dylan who still isn't over his parents' death. Grinch on the other hand doesn't know anything about kids and tries between piloting for rescue missions and doing little craftsmen's jobs to find enough time for his son and their new life.
One night Grinch is asked by a local realtor to assist a new tenant and this is how he meets Elizabeth, who is completely scared. As an operative for Blackthorne Grinch interprets the signs but doesn't know why the woman is so scared - until he gets a formal phone call from his company that asks him to help Elizabeth.
Grinch, Elizabeth, Will and Dylan were solid and well elaborated characters.
The plot of the story was straight forward but in my opinion a bit flat and unsatisfactorily. With this I mean that Elizabeth's ex-husband seemed to be a real villain who would go through any trouble to get to Elizabeth but as soon as he finds her he just "crumbles"? Well, Elizabeth did try to face him but I didn't really feel that (or wasn't it convincingly enough) conveyed to me? After years of beating, in just one short dialogue the wife beater becomes communicative and remorseful? Needless to say that the local lady who helped him to find his wife was just completely ridiculous.
Besides these little details there is one major issue that bothered me completely: this book resembled "When the Danger Calls" just too much: OK, the Blackthorne operative (of course) but then again a single mother with a young child? And again the discussion if he should quit his job for her sake? Finally, I would have appreciated if the end wasn't that rushed but a bit more elaborate and atmospheric. Maybe I made a mistake when I finished "When the Danger Calls" and started immediately this book.
Nice, but in no way the same level as the first installment of the series.

Danger in Deer Ridge Blackthorne Inc Book 4 edition by Terry Odell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The cover caught my attention (I like deer) and from the first page to the last I was totally intrigued. The characters were likeable and believable, the story very interesting! I enjoy mysteries muchly and the romance in this one just enhanced the story! Plus I read it less than a day and will look for more by this offer!
Terry Odell is now my "new" favorite author. She writes a wonderful story that keeps your attention and puts you right in with the action. I liked this book so well, I purchased a second one and loved that one too! Can't wait to read more. I'd recommend any of her books to anyone looking for adventure, romance and suspense.
Lots of action and suspense mixed with a sweet romance. It made me want to keep reading to the end and left me looking for the next book.
I have read all the other Blackthorne Inc books. This one was a disappointment. The beginning started out well, but some where in the middle it got super boring. I had to force myself to keep reading. The pace picked back up towards the end. I thought the ending could have been a bit better. I felt like it was a cliff hanger.
I have read several of Terry Odell's books and this one is by far my favorite.
The danger revolves around Elizabeth Parker and her son, Will, who have escaped an abusive relationship and are trying to establish new identities and new lives. That might have been easier had Elizabeth not taken something else when she ran from her home city to rural Colorado.
Enter Mark Grinciewicz, Grinch to his friends and associates atBlackthorne, Incorporated. Grinch's ex-wife and her husband recently died, so he now has custody of his five-year-old son, Dylan. He has not seen the boy since he was a baby and is ill-equipped to be be a father, but he is determined to do what it takes to help his son adjust to a new life. When he gets a call from Blackthorne, requesting that he take a simple assignment--teach a woman how to fit into the community under her new identity--he reluctantly accepts the task.
I enjoyed all the characters in this story, especially the two young boys and how they bonded. Grinch was one of the best romantic heroes, stumbling, far from perfect, yet charming and strong. It was a real pleasure to journey through the story with Elizabeth as she evolved from the scared, paranoid woman in the beginning, to the capable, self-assured and self-actualized woman at the end. She had to overcome a lot of distrust and fear in order to stand up to her husband and then make choices for the rest of her life. One of the nicest things about her transformation is that it came from her. She was not the victim, saved by the big strong hero.
Kudos to the author for that.
If there is one thing you must know about the Blackthorne, Inc series, it is that there are the same basic themes running throughout the entire series. Now, most books in this genre do follow some sort of format, but quite honestly, I found all the books in this series essentially the same, so far. They're is a mothering character involved/family drama, and the author seems to be fairly anti upper-class. As for action, it was so-so. The biggest issue I had was that the author kept going back over, and eluding that bad guys follow the rules. Isn't that what makes them bad guys in the first place?? Don't they stop at nothing to get what they want?? Outside of overly dramatic leading women who frustrated me, (I will never understand how a romantic partner can get upset about their partner not tell them about their job entails, if security is a factor.) It was a pretty boring read.
The story was very good until the end. SPOILER ALERT Norma's actions re Elizabeth and Grinch was so unbelievable. Also, Grinch would NEVER have taken Victors word and let him leave with Elizabeth. Victors about face was too out of character.
