This is not an easy book to read but so worth the commitment. The very effort to understand where the author is taking you pulls you into her search for identity and a bit by bit lifting of the shroud covering the history of her family, especially that of her parents and her mother's sister. The author has taken us with her on the journey and we come to the end knowing that real life doesn't give us all the answers or the ' and they lived happily ever after' that fiction and our own minds want to find. I so wanted to 'figure it out' but ended up being relieved that even with the missing pieces the author has a truer understanding not only of her family history but of how it shaped the mysteries of her own memories.

I have read several books with similar stories. Interesting to read how so many survivors have stories they provide in similar ways , being convoluted and unclear and how difficult it is for families to figure out and understand in a chronological order. For some we learn their history and others it is lost forever in their denial and desire to leave the past behind.
A lyrical, fascinating book. The negative reviews for this book underscore the author's point by showing bigotry towards Jews and gay people or endorsing destructive family secrets that rob children of their identity. At best these haters are clueless, at worst they are exactly the sort who betray their neighbors during genocide.
I remained mesmerized by this book about two two sisters trying to find out who they were. Their parents were victims of WWII who had recreated themselves to avoid remembering the atrocities of of being Jewish. Every thing these girls were told and believed about themselves was not true, including being raised Catholic when they were Jewish. A real page turner that shows the overwhelming strength of the human spirit.
This author did a wonderful job of intertwining the past with the present. Glad she did too as the past was very difficult and hard to comprehend what life was like for her parents without being sick of the terror they must have felt. The human mind is an amazing thing. At first hard to understand how her parents denied their heritage but by the end of the book, you get it at least. This is a tale of bravery and an unwavering spirit of survival.
This book kept my eyes glued to the pages. I just finished it and loved it. It was a view of the holocaust that I had not had before...the trauma it left in its wake and the damage to families if indeed there was any family left...and the love families had for each other even if they didn't understand each other very well. Sadly, some of the pre-holocaust events were strikingly similar to things going on today.
A very good read, one that you will not want to miss. This is an uplifting but tragic story and one that unfortunately not unique to this family. It's true that this family went to extremes to hide their true identity, even from their children but they did it for two reasons love and fear. I lived next door to a couple with a similar history but they never denied their heritage. Their story still tugs at my heart 35 years after it was related to me.
I really enjoyed her story in part because my parents would adamantly refuse to talk about our family histories. My father wouldn't even acknowledge the questions and my mother would sternly tell me to "Leave it alone. It's in the past. Let it stay there." In researching my genealogy, I did learn that this was a fairly common experience among the first and second generation Irish. I was told this by many in Ireland and in Newfoundland which was the first place many Irish including my grandparents landed in their flight from Ireland. Helen Fremont's parents' experience had to be far more traumatic than mine but I could relate in some small measure. Her ability to persevere and reconstruct the world before she was born is remarkable. It doesn't detract in the least that she had to create some dialog and conversations or even to embellish some experiences. Actually I found that ability to be an asset that contributed greatly to my enjoyment.
